Charles Edward Marsh was born in Hartwell, Ohio, on 17th January, 1887. His father was a lawyer but left his wife and six children in around 1900. His mother took the family to Coalgate in the Oklahoma Territory. After leaving school Marsh worked in the coal mining industry. In 1906 he enrolled in Haverford College near Philadelphia..
